Rainbow Cactus – Jewel of the Southwest

Echinocereus rigidissimus var. rubrispinus, commonly known as Rainbow Cactus or Arizona Rainbow Cactus, is a spectacular little cactus prized for its colorful bands of pink, red, white, and golden spines. Native to the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico, this compact cactus develops a beautifully ribbed, cylindrical form and can produce gorgeous pink to magenta flowers when mature. Growing to approximately 6–12 inches tall and 3–5 inches wide, it is an excellent choice for rock gardens, desert landscapes, containers, and cactus collections. Best suited to USDA Zones 8–11, it thrives in bright light and full sun, with warm temperatures around 65–95°F (18–35°C). Once established, it can tolerate brief temperatures around 10–15°F (-12 to -9°C) when kept completely dry, making it one of the more cold-hardy small cacti. Plant in fast-draining soil, water deeply only when the soil is completely dry, and reduce watering during cool weather. With its colorful spines and showy flowers, Rainbow Cactus is a true Southwestern gem for any cactus collection.
