Melocactus conoideus, commonly called Turk’s Cap Cactus, Turk’s Head Cactus, Melon Cactus, or Turk’s Cap, is a distinctive cactus native to Bahia, Brazil, prized for its compact, ribbed body and spectacular cephalium. The cephalium develops once the plant reaches maturity, typically after 5–10 years, emerging from the top as a dense, woolly, bristly structure. Once formed, it gradually grows taller as the plant produces flowers and fruit, creating the classic Turk’s Cap appearance. Mature plants typically reach 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) tall and 4–8 inches (10–20 cm) wide. Provide bright light, excellent drainage, and warm conditions around 85–100°F (29–38°C). Protect from frost and temperatures below 40°F (4°C). Melocactus conoideus is Critically Endangered, making responsibly propagated specimens especially valuable to collectors.
